Gotham FC has made history by beating the Kansas City Current in a tense playoff match. The win sends Gotham to the semifinals for only the second time ever.
Gotham FC, the lowest-ranked team in the playoffs, surprised many by defeating the top-seeded Kansas City Current 2-1 after extra time. This victory is the first time Gotham has ever beaten Kansas City, ending the Current's strong home record.
The match was tied 1-1 after regular time. Katie Stengel scored the winning goal in the 121st minute, coming off the bench to make a key impact. Earlier, Jaedyn Shaw scored Gotham's first goal and assisted Stengel's winner.
Both teams missed important players due to injuries. Kansas City played without their top scorer Temwa Chawinga, while Gotham's leading scorer Esther González was available but did not play. Despite this, Gotham controlled much of the first half and scored in the 68th minute.
Jaedyn Shaw’s goal was her first in the playoffs. Kansas City equalized late in stoppage time with a goal from Ellie Wheeler. In extra time, Gotham’s goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger made crucial saves to keep the team in the game.
Gotham FC now moves on to the semifinals, where they will face the Orlando Pride, the reigning champions. Gotham has also set a league record for the most playoff wins on the road, showing their strength away from home.
