During the NWSL Championship, fans from Gotham FC and Washington Spirit came together for a powerful chant. This moment showed their support for political change in Washington, D.C.
On November 22, at PayPal Park, fans of Gotham FC and the Washington Spirit gathered to watch the National Women’s Soccer League Championship. At the 51st minute of the game, supporters from both teams joined in a chant saying "Free D.C." This chant calls for Washington, D.C. to become a state, giving its residents full political rights.
The "Free D.C." chant is not new. Spirit fans have been using it at every game since mid-August. It began in sections 136 and 137, where the Spirit Squadron, the team’s independent fan group, meets. Unlike other chants that are fun or musical, this one carries a serious message about fairness and representation for the people of D.C.
Fans from other teams, including Gotham FC, have also joined the chant during matches against the Spirit. This shows growing support for the cause beyond just one team. The movement has gained strength especially after recent events in Washington, D.C., such as the National Guard being called in and concerns about safety and rights in the city.
